Console Table Makeover (Twice!)

The projects are really getting cranked out on the blog, aren’t they?  I want to share my power cords uh, newly refinished console table with you.

Distressed Black Console Table

This poor table has been through two makeovers.  (Unfortunately, I put it on the floor, before I realized I should show it off.)  Here it is before, before:

Blonde Console Before
There was absolutely nothing wrong with it!  The strikes it had against it were 1)  The contemporary style and; 2)  The blond color.  The color doesn’t sell at my store.  You may have even seen the rest of the pieces to this set on your local Craigslist.   I thought it might be easier to spray paint (chalk paint just didn’t seem right on these clean lines…).

Console Table Bonding Primer

Before I repaint something like this, I will first give it a coat of bonding primer (this one is from Sherwin Williams).  Yikes!  No going back at this point.

In the past, I’ve used espresso colored spray paint and been very happy with the rich brown color, so that’s the direction I went.

Console Spray Painted

And, here it is again!  It doesn’t look too bad, does it?  It didn’t have any “direction”, though.  There is no wood graining, and the brown just looked brown.  It was also one of things where the more I looked at it, the more spray-painted it looked.  So sad.

It got moved around the store, and I used it to set a hutch on.

Console with Hutch

Obviously, it disappeared.

Drum roll to it’s final finish…!

Black Chalk Paint Console

The final product! It looks So. Much. Better! I used homemade chalk paint (1 c. paint, 1/4 calcium carbonate, 2 T. water).  It was finished with dark wax. That’s what the streaks are from on the top.  It was s little challenging trying to figure out where to make scuff marks since the legs are rounded.  Overall, I’m very happy with it–it looks pulled into the right century, or at least, the right decade!  Now, I think it will sell!
